Jewelry package history

History of Jewelry Box

Throughout history, jewelry has been considered precious belongings. In ancient times the way jewelry was stored was to keep it safe, in contrast to current times where the main purpose is to keep it from damage. For these reasons, jewelry boxes have changed over time in shape and size. In the past, jewelry boxes were referred to as jewelry caskets and resemble small treasure chests.

Ancient Egypt

The first invited jewelry boxes were in ancient Egypt. For Egyptians jewelry has more of a spiritual aspect rather than class status. For that reason, jewelry caskets were common in men and women, rich and poor. For rich people, the jewelry box was beautifully designed and with incredible carved pieces of gold or silver. For low-class people, jewelry boxes were made of wood.

18th Century

In the 18th Century, jewelry boxes passed through several changes. The production of trinket boxes saw a pike with flowers and delicate decorations, made in a different material but the most popular was porcelain. In the late 18th Century, musical jewelry boxes re-emerged, containing small musical boxes that resemble birds singing.

With the advent of the Industrial revolution, mass production affect the target market of jewelry. Fine jewelry became affordable for middle-class people, and jewelry boxes became smaller to accommodate middle-class people.

Art Nouveau - 21st Century

Art Nouveau had a major impact on jewelry boxes marking a transition design. The new look on jewelry boxes was more related to a nature theme painted with beautiful floral motifs to appear more feminine.

Over time and under the world's circumstances the jewelry box has changed to adapt to the new needs of the people.

Modern Jewelry Package

In today's world, jewelry package is used for market and display purpose to sell jewelry. An article about the past and present of the jewelry box, mentions that the package should complement the jewelry, and make the jewelry stand out. Often gold jewelry is placed in red or black color packages to make it pop out. We need to think about how the package can attract people to buy the jewelry.

In another news article, I found out that the look of jewelry packages is shifting through more minimalistic and sustainably made materials. Royksopp And Tom Wood launched an elegant androgynous jewelry collection. The package of this jewelry collection leads more to a minimalistic look, with a white color package and minimal details in the package.

Inca Jewelry History

Jewelry for the Inca meant social status and proximity to the God Inti. Most of their jewelry was made out of gold because resemble the sun. The Sapa Inca (the Inca ruler) wore a lot and big jewelry every day. Necklaces were very common among men and women, but bracelets were exclusive for women. There is no data on how Inca stored their jewelry because they were the whole time and the maximum amount possible.

We know that the Incas had their way of mummifying their dead. They put the dead in a fetal position, dissect the body and cover it in layers of cloth along with food and their belongings. They put them in caves and burial chambers. But when an Inca ruler died they were mummified and put in sacred locations like mountains along with all their gold (which mostly were jewelry) with him.
