Week 10 (11/10): Inca's four main deities

Viracocha

He is the creator god, the father of everything. He gave light to the world by creating the god Inti and Mama Quilla.

Inti

The God of the sun is considered an all-powerful and benevolent god and capable of great generosity. Inca emperors considered themselves direct descendants of Inti.

Inti was created by the supreme god Viracocha, although the Incas considered Inti as their main god. Viracocha was of higher status than him but usually remained in the background.

Inti created the Inca civilization founders along with her sister and wife Mama Quilla. Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo were the first Inca rulers.

He controlled the Inca's agricultural activities and solar eclipses.

Until today there is a festival that celebrates the god Inti, called the Inti Raymi.

Mama Quilla

The third most powerful god in the Inca pantheon. It was the older sister and wife of Inti and the mother of Manco Capas and Mama Ocllo. She was the goddess of marriage and the menstrual cycle and was considered a defender of women.

One myth surrounds the moon and is related to its dark spots. It was believed that a fox fell in love with Mama Quilla because of her beauty. But when he rose into the sky, she squeezed him against her, producing the patches.

Another myth was that the Inca believed that during a lunar eclipse an animal was attacking Mama Quilla.

Manco Capac & Mama Ocllo

Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo were descended from the god Inti and Mama Quilla. They emerged from lake Titicaca and their mission was the civilized the people of the earth. They were sent with a golden bar to find fertile land to find their city. Manco Capac taught men to work the land and hunt. Mama Ocllo taught women to cook and made their clothes.
